When DJ Kelly and her three fellow Seattle art gallery owners open their doors one morning, they don't expect to find a dead body on the floor. Who could this young woman be? And why has someone stabbed her to death and then ransacked their gallery? DJ's talkative inner voice doesn't have a clue, nor do her BFFs--Nita Marie, Jo, and Bobbie. None of their artwork seems to be missing. Maybe a framed photograph of a famous terrorist attack that apparently slipped under the copy machine during the burglary might hold a clue. Is this photograph a clue to the murder in their gallery? DJ isn't certain, but when a jaded, know-it-all detective belittles her capabilities and those of her pals, DJ convinces her friends that they should take matters into their own hands--and four new crime fighters are born.

KILLER IMAGE The Art Gallery Mystery Series Book 1 edition by Drema J Reed Literature Fiction eBooks

In Killer Image (Book 1), we meet D.J., a retired mother and grandmother, and three of her friends, also retired. Not quite ready for the rocking chair, these 70-something ladies open an art gallery in town and we are quickly and easily settled into the happenings of a busy city. Right away, the author’s humor and clean comedic timing shine through the characters. D.J., along with her ‘little voice’ which is frequently answered aloud and in public, make their way home each day, taking shortcuts through buildings, elevators, and public transit, all the way to her sometimes lonely little apartment. The story then throws us into a dark plot to recover a damaging photograph and find the killer of a young lady. All before a dirty bomb brought over by an Arabic terrorist group is detonated.
The second in the series, Killer Genes, brings our friends back into action, and ever so slowly, but nicely done, a deeper layer is revealed about each character. We wake up with D.J. as, over coffee and the paper, she is ‘[i]nhaling the wonderful aroma . . .” and lets out the ‘requisite Ahhh.’ Not a bad way to start the day. But it doesn’t last long. D.J.’s old nursing school friend, Darlene, asks a favor of our senior sleuth to find a missing Psych patient. Who better than a woman who has tense conversations with her little voice to sign in at the mental ward for a bit of sneaky investigation. And once again, Detective Koehan is not going to like this police report. He doesn’t make it easy for the women to do their sleuthing. And once again, the responding officers “…came, they wrote, they scowled, they left.”
D.J., with a fine appreciation for coffee, knows who she is, accepts that she can be as obnoxious as ‘that detective in the Frost series’ and convincingly draws her friends in to solve each mystery. The characters are well defined, each with different characteristics, yet bonded enough to provide believability as to their friendship status. The interactions between D.J. and Detective Koehen are wonderful, and as we learn more about him, the interplay can only get better! And who knew that little fact about Mona Lisa’s eyebrows? Get book one and two because number three is on the way! Enjoy!

KILLER IMAGE The Art Gallery Mystery Series Book 1 edition by Drema J Reed Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I love Cozy Mysteries. This fulfilled my expectations, a tantalizing mystery with plenty of humor. At the end I felt I knew everyone in the story personally! I am impatiently waiting for the next episode of the adventure. I will feel like I am meeting old friends once again.
I have just finished and enjoyed Killer Image, first in a new cozy series. I didn't know what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised by the thoughtful, clever writing style, and charming characters. I love something with a funny little bite to it, and this does not disappoint. I wish I could write a clever review to do it justice. Instead, I'll just wait for the next installment in this series, and hope I can think up a good one by then.
I so looked forward to reading this cozy mystery - it had all the elements to be a great book but... first, it takes places in Seattle and I live in/love the area. All the familiar landmarks of downtown, Pill Hill, etc. make the book interesting IF one knows the city. And, too, with four "older ladies" involved in running an art gallery, it has all the elements of a good read but... The first person's narrative gets so old quickly - her Other Voice becomes annoying when she speaks aloud to it. Makes one think of a aging senior babbling away (and I am in the senior category so I can be critical). And, too, with her other compatriots in crime solving, their "adventures? are just not believable. How many times can one bug the detective in charge by stomping into his office every day? The storyline is interesting but quickly gets diminished by the excessive amount of unnecessary info (apparel details, old elevator, bathroom breaks, etc.) which are totally irrelevant to the story. Afraid I can't even finish reading it and I seldom write a review before making every effort to finish the book no matter how good or bad... I do applaud the author for a great effort toward a cozy mystery - wish it were better...
Overall I liked the book. I did have trouble believing these women were over 70. I could believe they had been friends for years and it was a little hard to accept that they got involved in solving a murder for someone they didn't know. However, the incidents in which they found themselves were funny. You can't let these "old ladies" out of your sight.
This is the author's first novel. It was a bit wordy and the characters, especially the protagonist, not quite believable. The plot was a bit far fetched for my tastes. All that said, it was a quick and pleasant read. I would be willing to try a second book from this author and hope she learned from her first try.
If you're tired of tough-guy mysteries and either sex or blood on every page, try this one...unusual leading ladies are four women "of a certain age" who join together to solve a mystery. They are delightful ladies, from jittery Jo and efficient Nita Marie, to always-got-it-together Bobbie and ditzy D.J. It was fun to spend some time with those women, grandmothers all. The Seattle setting makes me appreciate my California sunshine. The plot moves right along, as do the ladies, although they move a little slower than the plot line.
From the time I knew the author was writing a book I was riddled with excitment to read it. I was not disappointed at all. It is funny, mysterious, with great characters. The personalities of the four "old" ladies is sure to make the reader relate to people they know. I know it did me, but then I know those ladies, but even at that, I could relate to Others that have been outstanding in my life. This author has a great sense of humor and an understanding of what it takes to be an great author. I can't wait for the next book in the series, I am wondering what these "old" ladies with get themselves into next time. This is an incredible read. I highly recommend it.
