This book and its' followup, Raging Storm, fed into my own personal set of what-ifs. That is the reason why I finally caved in and bought the series. I basically read them in one piece over the course of four or five days.
Vannetta Chapman is one of my personal favorite authors. This set of books is SO far from what she usually writes, or at least what I have read of hers, that it boggles your mind. How does one person write both cozy mysteries and this crazy, modern, edgy thriller? Or at least "thriller" is my word for this book.
I was mesmerized from the moment I started and to be honest, I became so involved with the story that I would stop reading and have to literally look around at my world to reorient myself. It IS that realistic. I even stopped reading at one point and discussed what I was reading with my husband, because I was so taken up with the story.
I admit that it took me a while to decide to read this series, precisely because it was so far from what what I usually read. But I highly recommend that you take a chance and read it.

The three Remnant books must be read in sequence! The suspense, the character development, the descriptive detail all make the reader want to read in one sitting! And of course living in Texas in the areas described in detail added so much realism to each of the three novels! Not so relaxing but so entertaining!
Very well written. Keeps your attention throughout the entire book. Reminds you that even though the Lord is in control scary things can still and will happen. Trust and faith will carry us through.
Wow, where do I start...

If you are a fan of dystopian fiction you need to get this book ASAP. It is so real it makes you think about how you would survive if all electronic devices stopped working including cars, laws were obsolete and you had to survive off the land.

Chapman does a wonderful job telling this through Christian eyes. Refreshing take on dystopian fiction. Already getting started on the second book and short e-novella.
The fact that this is a clean Christian story is enough for me to rate a 3, but this was a great read too. The story is believable, and interesting. The characters are so real that the you can actually relate to their feelings. And they remember that God is in charge. Although, more prayer would have been good.
Deep Shadows is a book that really makes you think how much we depend on electricity for everything. Even things we don't associate with it, depends on it one way or another. It also is a book that makes you think about how we have to depend on others. Sometimes someone has a strength that we need and we have to learn to trust work with them even if it goes against what we want.
This is an insightful as well as a page turning book and I hope that others will give it a try.
This story gives a look at what might happen if a solar flare knocks out modern technology.
Everyone in Abney, a small Texas town work together to protect themselves.
The town is united as the elders in town share their knowledge of survival with the younger generations.
They show the true grit of Texans in time of trouble.
I loved the story, the characters, and the storyline and look forward to next book in the series.
My usual genre of choice is not dystopian fiction, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The concept of a solar flare knocking out all electronics was very believable and somewhat scary, if I thought about it too much. It really made me want to go out and stock up on supplies and build a special shelter! Max and Shelby, the two main characters, have a romantic tension between them that I kept waiting to get resolved...until the last page, when it did end in a cliffhanger. I would have given it 5 stars if not for that! I highly encourage those who read this book to also read the other two books in the series. It did not disappoint.
