I had never heard of this book until someone mentioned it in a review (thank you nameless reviewer!). I looked it up, bought it, and was, by turns, shocked, appalled, enthralled, sad and totally grossed out. In other words....it was quite a read. The premise is one we've heard of before. Vampires walk among us taking sips here and there from unsuspecting people. These are smart ones though. They have come up with a sure fire way to get their blood on the hoof....or sneaker. They run a swanky club for the important people and a peep show for those more financially challenged. The sign over the doorway to the peep show says simply "LIVE GIRLS". A misnomer if I've ever heard one.
Davey Owen, a nice young man, is having a spectacularly bad day. He takes a walk and does something he's never done before; he walks through a curtained doorway that is marked by a sign saying LIVE GIRLS. He leaves a different man. As Davy tries to figure out what is happening to him, he meets an older man who has recently lost his sister and niece in an instance of domestic violence. Violence that has him wondering if there isn't something more that went on. These two men will join forces to try and bring down a bloodthirsty group of vampires that believe the world is theirs for the taking. Obviously it won't be easy.
I enjoyed this book immensely. There are both explicit sexual situations and graphic violence, so be warned. I'd like to tell you that everybody lives happily ever after but I wouldn't want to give the story away....and vampire stories rarely end that way.

I don't know how I managed to miss Ray Garton for all these years (he started publishing in the 1980s) but I've found him now! "Live Girls" is Garton's take on vampires. I can't say that he adds much to the conventional mythos, his vampires are more or less the standard model, but Garton adds his own erotically charged hard edge to the mix. How many vampire novels have you read that start out with a protagonist walking into a Times Square peep show? Our guy does, and boy, does he get more than he bargained for.
Not only is the plot excellent, and the sex and horror graphically detailed, but it all blends seamlessly. And, surprise! - Mr. Garton can write - very well. The vocabulary is respectable, the descriptions are three dimensional and in living color and accurate (no, I've never been in one of those peep shows and I'm sure not going in now, but I remember when Times Square looked exactly as it is described here), and the dialog, which is usually what separates the real authors from the wannabes, is great.
I'm still a sucker for the cheapie self-published offerings (which is what I thought this was at first glance, not realizing that it was "real"novel published almost 30 years ago). Sometimes they're OK, sometimes horrible, sometimes a real treat. Live Girls was the latter, by turns, scary, erotic, scary again, and thoroughly satisfying, right through to the ending, which Mr. Garton plays straight and true. I'll be reading more of Garton's work for sure.
Recommended (but not for those easily offended by graphic language and sex).

It's important to remember while reading this book that it was released in the 1980s when vampire fiction wasn't as pervasive as it is these days. This was back when vampires were still the bad guy and not sparkly heartthrobs with a heart of gold.
Live Girls is a fast-moving novel that has mystery, suspense, horror, and just enough eroticism to make this steamy but not smutty.
The characters are all memorable - each has a unique personality and aren't cardboard cutouts. The vampires in this novel are truly evil and you want them to be destroyed.
The plot was original, and even compared to the glut of vampire fiction today, it still stands apart.
It's great reading this book because it is truly a time capsule from the 1980s. Smoking is part of life - in the office, in clubs, in the home. Several times the plot could have been shortened by the simple use of a cell phone...but of course there were no cell phones in 1987. It was fun reliving a time that wasn't so long ago but also is so different than today.
Definitely worth reading if you are looking for good horror of any type.
